A Tesla Model X owner attempting to overland the entire length of the Americas just learned a harsh truth in Chile’s Atacama Desert (the driest place on Earth):

When your battery says 0%, even the sun goes “bro, I’m doing my best.”

After miscalculating energy use while climbing to 3,000 meters, he was left with 37 km of range… and 42 km to the nearest charger.

Emergency move: Deploy solar panel on the side of the Pan-American Highway like a true EV survivalist.

Result? A heroic 1–2 km of range per hour.

At that rate, he would’ve reached the charger sometime in 2028.

Five tow companies said “nah,” but a nearby construction crew finally let him plug into their generator like a desperate EV refugee. Eventually a tow truck dragged him 30 km to a fast charger.

Moral of the story: Gas cars run out of fuel → you’re screwed. EVs run out of battery → you become a temporary solar-powered desert nomad with a very patient car.

The adventure continues… just maybe with better range calculations next time.
