U.S. regulators have begun rulemaking that could require all new vehicles to include clearer, mechanically reliable emergency door releases after incidents involving occupants trapped during electrical failures. If adopted, the rules could lead to redesigns of electronic door systems, while Tesla is already developing updated handle designs and combined electronic-mechanical releases for future models like the Cybercab.

The proposed changes aim to improve emergency safety while encouraging more resilient door systems across the auto industry.
