Ford CEO Jim Farley just unveiled the Universal EV Platform and basically said:
“We’re building a mid-size electric pickup for around $30,000. It’ll cost less to own than a Tesla Model Y, have more space than a RAV4, and yes — we’re finally fighting back against the Chinese EV invasion. This is one of the most important trucks in Ford’s history.”
Translation for everyone who’s been watching the EV wars: Ford looked at BYD selling $20–25k EVs worldwide and went: “Okay fine, we’ll stop pretending $50k+ is affordable. Here’s a truck that doesn’t cost more than your house down payment.”
Meanwhile Tesla owners reading this: “My Model Y says hi… and also ‘good luck beating my Supercharger network and brand loyalty.’”
Ford: “Lower ownership costs, more space, American-built.” BYD somewhere: “We’ve been doing that for years… but okay, welcome to the party, grandpa.”
This is the EV price war we’ve all been waiting for:
- Chinese makers drop prices to insane levels
- Tesla holds the premium line
- Ford finally wakes up and goes “hold my Blue Oval, I can play too”
Next year we might actually see a sub-$30k electric truck rolling off a U.S. assembly line. Who’s buying the first one just to say “I helped humble the competition”?
