The Menlo Park Police Department tried out three locally-designed Tesla Model Y crossovers as patrol cars, and the results echo concerns from other departments: quick acceleration and steering were appreciated, but officers cited small interior space, “smart car” features, and low maneuverability (like jumping curbs!) as major drawbacks. Even Autopilot had some awkward moments during patrol duty.

Imagine Autopilot getting confused when pulling over or the touchscreen making quick actions difficult in a critical situation!

The takeaway? What works for everyday driving doesn’t always cut it for law enforcement.

Interestingly, the Fort Bragg Police Department is having much better luck with Ford F-150 Lightning trucks, praising their storage, utility, and cost-effectiveness!
