Charging Trees and Urban Integration:

How do the “charging trees” introduced by Gravity Technologies blend into urban environments?

While designing the Charging Trees, Gravity Technologies focused on blending them into urban environments. Instead of demanding dedicated stations, these chargers occupy sidewalk or curbside space, taking up minimal real estate and integrating seamlessly with Light Poles and phone poles. The charging trees blend with the existing street aesthetics. The tree-like structure, with branching arms holding the charging cables, mimics the natural world, creating a visually harmonious element rather than an industrial eyesore. While specific materials are yet to be revealed, they’ll likely be designed to complement the
surrounding environment, making them a welcome addition to the urban landscape.

What advantages do these curbside charging stations offer in terms of aesthetics and convenience

Curbside charging stations, like Gravity Technologies’ “charging trees,” boast a double
win for cityscapes. Their aesthetics are far more inviting than traditional charging stations. Imagine Curbside charging stations, particularly those designed as EV charging trees with hinged swing arms, which offer significant advantages in aesthetics and convenience. Their sleek, tree-like design blends seamlessly into urban landscapes, enhancing the visual appeal of streets and public spaces. The hinged swing arm houses a cable that pivots down for charging sessions, providing easy access for local drivers regardless of their vehicle’s make, model, or port location.

After charging, the arm automatically raises, securely latching the EV connector back onto the pole. This design keeps the equipment out of sight and out of the way, reducing clutter and minimizing tripping hazards for pedestrians, thereby maintaining a clean and safe environment. This replaces bulky, industrial fixtures with a touch of green design. Beyond looks, convenience is key. Gravity Charging trees can charge 2 EVs at the same time. The Curbside placement frees up valuable parking spaces and allows drivers to charge closer to their destinations, eliminating the need to seek out dedicated charging stations. This translates to a more pleasant experience for EV owners and a more visually harmonious city
environment.

Fast Charging Speeds and Range:

Fast charging speeds and extended range are crucial for the adoption of EVs. Rapid charging minimizes downtime, making EVs more practical for daily use and long-distance
travel, thereby addressing one of the main concerns of potential buyers—charging convenience. A greater range allows drivers to travel longer distances on a single charge, reducing “range anxiety” and the need for frequent recharging stops. Together, these advancements enhance the overall user experience, making EVs more competitive with traditional gasoline vehicles. Improving these aspects is essential for accelerating the transition to EV powered era.

What is the remarkable charging speed provided by these “charging trees”?

Gravity Technologies has designed its charging trees to provide up to 500 kW of charging speed. These charging trees are capable of distributing from 200 kW to 500 kW charging which is way more efficient than a conventional level 2 charging station. If we talk about the 8-10 hours of charging time that is required on a traditional level 2 charger, Gravity’s charging trees are significantly faster and more efficient in terms of charging speed and required time.

Unlike other fast charging stations, Gravity’s charging trees do not require any extensive
utility and it’s compatible with all EVs.

How does this charging speed translate into adding range to electric vehicles (200 miles in 5-13 minutes)?

One of the most crucial aspects for any EV driver is the charging speed and the range that it
adds to your electric vehicle. Gravity Technologies understands the importance of range anxiety which is usually found among EV drivers. These charging trees are capable of peaking at 500 kW charging which provides 200 miles of range in just 5 minutes and a 200 kW charger can add 200 miles of range in just 13 minutes. Gravity is also working on improving the efficiency of a curbside charging station. Gravity provides more efficient charging speed as compared to traditional level 2 charging.

Competition with Tesla’s Supercharger Network:

As we all know Tesla has been in the industry for a quite long time and their charging network is nationwide providing charging stations in almost any part of the country.
However, Gravity Technologies has a suitable plan to expand its innovative charging stations to fill the gap that is left by Tesla and other competitors.

How does Gravity Technologies plan to expand these innovative charging solutions nationwide?

Gravity Technologies is currently aiming at making at least 10% of the parking meters
electrified. The founder and CEO, Moshe Cohen says they want to make sure that
every EV that is parked has access to a charging station whether it’s in a parking space, on-street, or personal garage. He also said, “Every time there’s an EV, that’s parked, and not plugged into the grid, that’s a wasted asset”.

Gravity Technologies wants to give grid or DEAP (short for Distributed Energy Access Points) access to every EV that’s on the street because, without the charging station, you are not using your EV at its full potential.

In what ways do these charging trees challenge Tesla’s existing Supercharger network?

Gravity is developing a DEAP charging network for on-street chargers which is more
efficient and powerful than the urban Tesla superchargers network. Let’s explore how they compare:

1. Charging Speed:

  • DEAP Trees: These curbside charging stations offer remarkable charging speeds. They can fully charge an electric vehicle (EV) in either 5 minutes (500 kW) or 13 minutes (200 kW).
  • Tesla Superchargers: While Tesla’s urban Superchargers are efficient, they typically have lower power than those on road-trip routes. The common Tesla Superchargers operate at 72 kW or 150 kW1.

2. Deployment and Accessibility:

  • DEAP Trees: These charging stations require no utility upgrades, making them easier to deploy. They can accommodate multiple charging sessions per space each hour, making them ideal for densely populated urban areas.
  • Tesla Superchargers: Tesla’s Supercharger network is extensive, but its availability depends on the location. Users may encounter challenges in areas where Superchargers are less prevalent.

3. Design and Safety:

  • DEAP Trees: The design of DEAP Trees keeps charging cables out of pedestrian and cyclist paths, improving safety and minimizing clutter. The hinged swing arm holds the cable, which pivots down during charging and automatically raises when charging is complete. This design avoids long cables, tripping hazards, and potential vandalism.
  • Tesla Superchargers: Tesla Superchargers are robust and reliable, but their design doesn’t integrate as seamlessly into urban environments as DEAP Trees do.

4. Network Expansion:

  • DEAP Trees: Gravity aims to develop a network of on-street DEAP charging more expansive than Tesla’s current Supercharger network. Their focus on curbside charging addresses the needs of city dwellers without home charging options.
  • Tesla Superchargers: Tesla’s Supercharger network is well-established, but its expansion pace may not match the rapid growth of EV adoption in urban areas.

Conclusion:

Charging Trees and curbside charging stations represent a transformative solution for urban EV infrastructure, combining functionality with aesthetic appeal. These innovations by Gravity Technologies enhance the availability and convenience of EV charging, crucially supporting the transition to greener transportation. With advanced features like hinged swing arms for easy access and rapid charging speeds, these stations address common concerns of EV owners, such as range anxiety and charging convenience.

As Gravity Technologies expands its network, aiming to electrify a significant portion of
urban parking meters, these charging solutions are poised to compete with established networks like Tesla’s, promoting a more sustainable and efficient future for urban mobility.
